Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann, Bus Éireann, Transdev, Local Link bus services and the taxi industry are uniting today to launch a campaign to challenge racism on public transport. Coordinated by the Immigrant Council of Ireland in partnership with Transport for Ireland and Dublin City Council, it is the biggest anti-racism campaign of its kind in Europe with over one thousand posters displayed during a two week period.
Brian Killoran, CEO of the Immigrant Council of Ireland, said, “The Immigrant Council is proud to link up with national transport agencies to promote a message of solidarity and zero tolerance towards racism. The public transport system is the perfect partner as it both serves and represents the cultural diversity in Ireland. To read full report visit the Transport Authority website.
I was sitting in my kitchen this morning having a cup of coffee when this issue was raised on Newstalk FM radio. The female presenter gave a brief general introduction and then proceeded to introduce her guest …. Dr. Ali Selim , the spokesperson for the Clonskeagh Mosque in Dublin . I have heard Dr. Selim speak before on radio here in Ireland. I have heard him on Newstalk FM and on RTE , the state broadcaster – in fact I have heard him interviewed no less than three times on which occasions he has openly stated that he believed in the death penalty for homosexuals and the stoning of women for adultery etc. Dr. Selim is very forthright and perversely honest in his views and when on one occasion he was asked if all the thousands of gays living in Ireland would be put to death in his hoped for Muslim Ireland , he reassured his host by explaining that there would be no need to kill all the gays in Ireland as the law would act as an effective deterrent.
Dr. Selim is a respected figure in Ireland. He is educated and articulate and often in the public eye ……………. He has never been called homophobic or indeed even intolerant. He is , as I have stated , a respected figure and , of course , he was treated as such during his stint on Newstalk FM when he made the point that Ireland was in need of hate speech laws to protect people from those who wished to spread hatred and division………… I feel I must pause here for a moment just to assure you that this is not a comedy script and that I’m not just making all this up as I go along. – No , this is real life here in multicultural and inclusive Ireland. Dr. Selim expressed concern at the rise of the ‘far right’ in Europe and was worried that this might embolden ‘far right’ individuals here in Ireland. Needless to say , the female presenter was equally concerned with the rise in ‘far right ‘ hatred and intolerance and obviously agreed with Dr. Selim that ever more hate speech legislation was required. She was also deeply concerned with the growing racism on public transport as were the legions of Irish radio listeners who could not wait untill the end of the broadcast to signal their virtue and their fidelity to the new inclusive , tolerant and diverse Ireland.
At no point did anyone mention the trivial matter of Dr. Selims advocacy of the death penalty for homosexuality much less the stoning of women ( and apostates )……..nor was there any consideration given to the fact that hate speech laws would , of course , have the effect of criminalising anyone who tried to discuss Dr. Selims pathological hatred of gays , jews and women… This is the state of things here in Ireland……. and it is getting worse by the day. Anne Marie , we need you back here in Ireland and we need you now.
